Collection Description & Creator Information

Scope and Contents

The colletion consists of correspondence, typescript poems, and corrected proofs of the British poet Theodore Wratislaw. The bulk of the correspondence is with John Gawsworth, pseudonym of British writer and poet Terence Ian Fytton Armstrong, who was the editor of Wratislaw's Selected Poems after the latter poet's death. There are several letters related to the publishing of Wratislaw's poems "At Bonchurch," "Far Apart," "On the Embankment," and his translation of "Villon," which were to be published in Gawsworth's Known Signatures (1932) anthology. Other letters mention authors and poets such as Arthur Machen, M. P. Shiel, Vincent O'Sullivan, A. C. Swinburne, and Arthur Symons. They also discuss Wratislaw's ill health, his proposed Memoires, and his early books such as Caprice and Orchids. In addition, there is a letter to Arthur Symons thanking him for including him in his book. Also included are typed copies of Wratislaw's poems "Far Apart," "On the Embankment," and his translation of "Villon," and proofs of "At Bonchurch" and "Far Apart," and a checklist of titles of Wratislaw's published books, all with holograph corrections by the author.
