Unsigned Document relating to Gavine Drummond, 1701
Collection Overview
Collection Description & Creator Information
- Description:
The collection consists of miscellaneous legal documents of Gawine (also spelled Gavin, Gawen, and Gavine) Drummond, county clerk for Monmouth County Court House in the state of New Jersey, and several members of his family. The documents include agreements, arbitration bonds, indentures, land grants, and surveys in either Shrewsbury in Monmouth County or in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County. The earlier ones date from the Colonial era in Eastern New Jersey and concern British officials or well-known British loyalists. Some names on the documents are those of the Board of Proprietors of the Eastern Division of New Jersey. The earliest document is a grant of three hundred acres of land in Monmouth County to Drummond by the "Proprietors of Eastern New Jersey" (or, the representatives of the British Crown), dated November 25, 1701. The grant stipulates that Drummond has to pay "Quit-rent," the land tax imposed by the colonial British government. Included is a hand-illustrated survey for a tract of land of Drummond, dated 1727, and a fragment of a survey signed by John Smyth, dated April 24, 1760. Other documents include a warrant for the arrest of John Johnson and George Wilcox, dated 1708 and signed by Lord Cornbury, governor of New Jersey from 1703 to 1708; an extract from the last will and testament of Gawine Drummond for members of his family, dated 1760; and another document of Drummond's heirs contesting the same will. There is a document of the Continental Congress, on vellum, appointing Edward Dunscomb as Captain in the U.S. Continental Army. It is signed by Samuel Huntington (signer of the Declaration of Independence) and dated February 24, 1781.
