Collection Overview
Collection Description & Creator Information
- Description:
This collection consists of selected manuscripts, epistles, minutes and other documents related to the Society of Friends, members of which are informally known as Quakers. Included is a small bound manuscript titled "The Preparative Meeting Book, 1775." It is a record of meetings of the Society of Friends in Stony Brook (Princeton, N.J.), dating from Aug. 4, 1775, till Feb. 1, 1785. The entries concern the building of a school to teach the doctrines of the Friends, appointing the trustees, setting the rules and regulations for the school, and building a house for the schoolmaster. The committee appointed in charge of the school consisted of Samuel Olden, Isaac Clarke, and Benjamin Clarke. In addition, there are four epistles (1799-1801) sent from the Yearly Meeting of Women Friends held in London to the Yearly Meeting of Women Friends held in Philadelphia, and one from the Monthly Meeting of the Women Friends at Chesterfield, Pa. There is an anonymous manuscript titled "A Disquisition on the Origin, Effects & Termination of Evil" (5 pp.), as well as a translation of a letter from the Quakers at Nismes (France) to Dr. E. L. Fox, which was copied from Llyod's Evening Post on March 9, 1785. There is also a printed document of the "Minutes of the Meeting of Sufferings of New-York, and the Testimony against Elias Hicks," dated July 6, 1829.
