- Scope and Contents
The collection consists mainly of diaries of Farwell, which provide a detailed description of life in Civil War era Chicago. Included are six diaries (1856, 1858, 1862-1863, 1864, 1865, 1880), Farwell's bank book from the First National Bank of Cheyenne, Wyoming (1892-1893), and his personal copy of Official Congressional Directory of the 2d Session, 51st Congress (Washington, D.C., 1890).

Farwell
Born in Cambridge, Mass., Farwell went to Chicago in 1856, and worked for A. G. Garfield, a hardware merchant, until 1864. In 1865 he made three overland trips to and from Denver, ultimately living in Denver as a store clerk. He later removed to Wyoming, and was elected the first superintendent of public instruction, serving from 1891 to 1898. He died in Spokane, Washington, in 1900.
