Subseries 1C: Books /repositories/5/archival_objects/1213791 15 boxes 1960-2009 Arrangement

This subseries is arranged alphabetically by title.

 Scope and Contents

This subseries consists of manuscripts, research, interviews, correspondence, and reviews for published and unpublished novels and non-fiction books. The bulk of the material dates from the 1960s and 1970s, but some projects were being edited up to the creator's death. All the material in this subseries is of a non-photographic nature, i.e. publications and manuscripts that did not include or revolve around photographic images. Photography-based books and manuscripts can be found in Series 2: Photography.

Many of the themes of Hall's creative writing were autobiographical or based on personal interest, and similar themes are often reflected in concurrent writings and photography projects located elsewhere in the collection.

This subseries is arranged into two divisions:

Published consists of research, interviews, correspondence, manuscripts, and reviews of Hall's published work dating primarily from the 1970s. Most of the material is undated and has been assigned dates based on residency and when the final work was published. A number of works have multiple working titles.

Unpublished consists of research, interviews, correspondence, and manuscripts of Hall's unpublished work dating primarily from the 1970s. Most of the material is undated and has been assigned dates based on context and residency. A number of works have multiple working titles.

The chronology for Hall's residency is provided at the series level. Unless otherwise noted, the majority of drafts are TMs with autograph corrections.

This publication was developed concurrently with the documentary Great American Cowboy (1973) and the photography book Rodeo (1975) and as a result many of the peripheral research files and materials can apply to any or all these projects. Disassociated "Cowboy Files" are located in Series 4: Miscellaneous and Unassociated Materials.
