Scope and Contents

This collection consists primarily of letters written by Reynaldo Hahn. The largest body of letters is addressed to Hélène Vacaresco, totaling 42 distinct letters from Hahn. Also present are letters to Hélène's mother, Euphrosine Vacaresco (Eufrosina Fălcoianu). Other recipients include Alfred de Vigny, Albert Gavy-Bélédin, Sully Prudhomme, René Peter, Paul Hervieu, Daniel Halévy, Julia Alphonse Daudet, Lucien Daudet, Robert Brussel, and other unidentified individuals. Additionally, non-correspondence materials include a manuscript regarding César Franck, personalized calling cards annotated by Hahn, a title page of a musical composition titled, "Adieu", a manuscript signed by journalist René Brest, and a musical manuscript signed by Hahn, La Nuit.

Collection Creator Biography:

Hahn

Reynaldo Hahn was a French composer of the fin de siècle. Born in Caracas, Venezuela to Elena Maria Echenaguera and the German merchant Carlos Hahn, Hahn grew up in Paris from age three. He attained instant fame in 1888 with his musical version of Si mes vers avaient des ailes, a poem by Victor Hugo. Between 1894-1896 Hahn had a romantic relationship with Marcel Proust and maintained a close friendship until Proust death in 1922. During World War II, Hahn was forced into hiding during the Nazi occupation of Paris. He returned to the city in 1945 and died there two years later.

Hélène Vacaresco was a Romanian-French writer and laureate of the Académie française. She was a permanent delegate to the League of Nations in 1925-26 and the only woman to serve with the rank of ambassador (permanent delegate).

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
