Abstract
Henry Markinfield Addey was a London publisher who is known for publishing Gustave Doré in England and for publishing the first English edition of Edgar Allan Poe's complete poems. Consists of family correspondence, memoir drafts, and one scrapbook.

- Description:
This collection consists of selected papers of Henry Markinfield Addey. It includes correspondence to members of his family, ditto proofs of chapters 2-7 of Mid-Century Memoirs of Literary London and various other typescripts of memoirs, a scrapbook with photographs, notes, and clippings relating to Markenfield Hall, and various other clippings. Also present are miscellaneous newsclippings, two business postcards, and a fragment of a cover for The Legend of the Wandering Jew illustrated by Gustave Doré.

Addey, Henry Markinfield
Henry Markinfield Addey was a London publisher who is known for publishing Gustave Doré in England and for publishing the first English edition of Edgar Allan Poe's complete poems. Born in 1818, Addey apprenticed with a bookseller in Barnsley and joined Chapman and Hall in 1845. In 1849, he partnered with Joseph Cundall to form Cundall & Addey. Three years later, he left Cundall and Addey to found his own company, Addey & Co, which existed until 1857. Following the death of his wife in 1859, Addey emigrated to the United States, where he published the serials Momus and White Mountain Echo before returning to England in 1898. Addey died in 1910.
