Abstract

Consists largely of correspondence between Sarah Anne Vinton and her cousin Leonard Case Alden, a Harvard graduate and lieutenant in the Civil War.

Collection Description & Creator Information

Description:

Consists of letters to Sarah Anne Vinton from her cousin Leonard Alden, her uncle Frederic Vinton, and her sister Charlotte Vinton. Also included is a eulogy book on Leonard Alden compiled by Frederic Vinton, containing two albumen portraits of Leonard and Sarah, and a Harvard University medal awarded to Sarah's father, George. The collection is of special interest both for Alden's references to student life at Harvard and Mount Holyoke (where Sarah was enrolled) and for his narrative of life as a civil war soldier after he enlisted in 1863. Included in the correspondence are extensive exchanges on class readings and accounts of specific seminars and faculty.

Arrangement
