For preservation reasons, original analog
and digital media may not be read or played back in the
reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media
but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog
audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality
standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests
are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note,
the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks
to as long as several months and there may be financial costs
associated with the process.

The collection consists of detailed manuscript maps of Vietnamese villages dating from the Vietnam War years, showing mmostly villages in the Quang Ngai Province (2 villages in the Quang Tri Province), with color-coded tissue overlays that identify the political sympathies of the residents in the village houses. There are 71 pen-and-ink and watercolor maps on 75 sheets, each with a tissue overlay stapled at one edge, the tissue marked with color dots. Each measures approximately 13 x 19 inches or the reverse. Text in Vietnamese, but most with contemporary pencil translations in English. Several have additional Vietnames notes included with the map. Each map's key ("Chu-Thich") identifies roads, temples, graves, types of houses, schools, waterways, etc. A loose key sheet serves as a guide to the meaning of the colored dots on the tissue overlays: red dots indicate the houses of Communist party members; yellow dots are houses of persons who regrouped to the North; blue dots are houses of persons who defected to the Viet Cong; grey dots are houses of persons who are suspected as VC cadres; and three yellow lines followed by a red dot are houses of person who have sympathy toward the National government as well as the VC.
