These student translations of Nadezhda Mandelstam's first memoir Hope Against Hope served as coursework for a "secret" graduate seminar that Brown taught in spring 1969 for the Slavic Department. Brown had his students engage in this project before another copy of the memoir was published by Atheneum in 1970.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor.
