Abstract

Consists primarily of letters from critic, novelist, and biographer Louis Kronenberger to his editors at Doubleday & Company.

Collection Description & Creator Information

Scope and Contents

Primarily includes a couple dozen autograph and typed letters, with a handful of postcards and notes from critic, novelist, and biographer Louis Kronenberger to his editors at Doubleday & Company, including editors-in-chief Sandy Richardson, Ray Roberts, and JoAnn Johnson, as well as other staff persons. The file also includes two letters from Kronenberger's wife, Emily Kronenberger, to Ray Roberts, and a small amount of related material, including routine publisher correspondence, printed matter, and ephemera.

Several letters relate directly to Kronenberger's 1974 life of John Wilkes, The Extraordinary Mr. Wilkes: His Life and Times (1974) and discuss it in detail. Additional letters straightforwardly deal with the business of writing-- Kronenberger references permissions, advances, contracts, reviews, and things of that nature. He also relays travel plans, mentions life in St. Andrews (New Brunswick), sends a list of people who should receive copies of his new book, and thanks Roberts for sending along various publications.

Collection Creator Biography:

Doubleday & Company, Inc.

Doubleday is an American publishing company founded by Frank Nelson Doubleday in 1897 as Doubleday & McClure Company. By 1947, it was the largest publishing house in the United States. With the acquisition of a new partner, Walter Hines Page, the firm became known as Doubleday, Page & Company from 1900 to 1927, and after its merger with George H. Doran, as Doubleday, Doran & Company from 1928 to 1945. The company assumed the title Doubleday & Company in 1946 upon Doran's retirement. In 2009, Doubleday merged with Knopf Publishing Group to form the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, which is now part of Penguin Random House.
