Collection primarily consists of orders, invoices, book catalogs, and correspondence from booksellers related to William Beebe's book purchases. Additionally, there is one folder that consists of materials about Beebe that was collected by Stromberg in prepartion to write a book.

Collection Creator Biography:

Beebe, William

William Beebe (1877-1962) was an American naturalist, marine biologist, explorer, and writer. After attending Columbia, Beebe was appointed to the New York Zoological Society as curator of ornithology and then later as the director of the Department of Tropical Research. Throughout his lifetime Beebe led several successful expeditions to support his research and writing. He is credited alongside engineer Otis Burton as being the designer of the bathysphere, a diving vessel that allowed Beebe to observe marine life in the deep sea.

Oliver Stromberg was a Maryland book collector interested in writing a book on American naturalist and explorer, William Beebe.

Purchase, 2018 (AM 2018-75).

Custodial History

Collection was purchased by Oliver Stromberg from Peacock Books in Massachusetts in 1993. Seller acquired the materials from an unnamed bookseller with ties to Mrs. Beebe.

Appraisal

No materials were removed from the collection during 2018 processing beyond routine appraisal practices.
