This collection consists of eighty-one letters to the translator and poet James Greene from various writers and artists, including Raymond Chandler, Ted Hughes, R.D. Laing, John Tavener, Ken Kiff, Frank Kermode, Iris Murdoch, and others. Most of the letters comment on Greene's translations of the poetry of Russian author Osip Madelstam, as well as Greene's own poems and plays, including Dead-man's-fall, Stalin's Mercy, and Stalin's Mirror.
