For preservation reasons, original analog
and digital media may not be read or played back in the
reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media
but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog
audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality
standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests
are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note,
the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks
to as long as several months and there may be financial costs
associated with the process.

The collection chiefly consists of 30 handwritten and typewritten letters (Spanish) from the Mexican poet, writer, and diplomat Octavio Paz to Claude Esteban. Other materials include a handwritten letter (French) from Esteban to Paz; five handwritten and typewritten letters (English and French) from other correspondents to Esteban via Paz; and one handwritten hotel message (Spanish) of a phone call from Paz to Esteban. Topics chiefly relate to translations undertaken by Esteban of works written by Paz, including Blanco and El mono gramático. Other topics include discussions relating to some of Esteban's writings, the literary magazine founded by Esteban, Argile, the magazine founded by Paz, Plural, the political environment in France and Mexico, and other matters.

Claude Esteban was born in Paris, France, in July 26, 1935. He was a French poet, essayist, and translator. Esteban published several books of poems and several collections of essays on poetry, literature, and visual art, and translated the works of various authors, including Octavio Paz, Jorge Luis Borges, and Federico García Lorca into French. He was awarded the Mallarmé Prize, the Grand Prix de Poésie de la Société des gens de lettres, the France Culture Prize, and the Prix Goncourt. He also founded the literary magazine, Argile. He died in Paris, France, on April 10, 2006.
