Collection Description & Creator Information
Consists of a collection of correspondence and printed materials assembled by German studies and comparative literature scholar Theodore Ziolkowski. The majority of the collection comprises Ziolkowski's files on German-born writer Hermann Hesse (1877-1962). These files include a few letters and photographs from Hermann Hesse and his family members, a more substantial group of correspondence and documents pertaining to Ziolkowski's own scholarship on Hesse, and a large collection of printed materials, both popular and scholarly in nature, documenting the reception of Hesse's work in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. These materials include reprints of scholarly articles in both English and German language journals, books, calendars, brochures and posters for events, magazines, comics, clippings, screenplays, ephemera, and more. They provide documentation of Hesse's influence on the work of American writers and academics and on counterculture in the United States in the mid-20th century. Other author correspondence and materials relate more broadly to 20th and early 21st century literature and include correspondence with a number of contemporary German authors and other authors writing in German.
