Abstract

Consists of letters, manuscripts and notes dating from 1847 to 1882, from French historian, writer, and librarian at the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, Ferdinand Denis. Also included is one letter written to him. Many of the items concern Brazil, but there are also two chapters apparently intended for a book.

Scope and Contents

Consists of letters, manuscripts and notes, nearly all in the hand of the French historian, writer, and librarian at the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, Ferdinand Denis. Also included is one letter written to him. Many of the items concern Brazil, but there are also two chapters apparently intended for a book, one on the natural history of the Arabic world and the other on the present state of North America, the latter apparently discussing the effects of European settlements on the indigenous peoples. Collection Creator Biography:

Denis

Jean-Ferdinand Denis was born in Paris, France, on August 13, 1798, and was a traveler, historian, writer, and librarian at the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève in Paris. He went to South America in 1816, and had the opportunity to travel to Brazil, where he stayed until 1821. He published more than twenty books covering a large range of subjects, particularly concerning the history of Brazil, such as Le Brésil (1822) and Résumé de l'histoire littéraire du Brésil (1826). Denis died in Paris, on August 1, 1890.
