Scope and Contents

Consists of materials pertaining to the collaboration between Peggy K. Liss and Carlos Fuentes on the television documentary series, The Buried Mirror, which was initially broadcast in 1992. Materials from the decade-long collaboration include photographs, public relations materials, newspaper clippings, reviews, articles, publications, program outlines/summaries, and other items.

Collection Creator Biography:

Liss, Peggy K.

Peggy K. Liss, a historian, educator, and author, was born on October 3, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated with a B.A. in history from Beaver College (1961), an M.A. in Latin American History from the University of Pennsylvania (1962), and a Ph.D. in Latin American/Ancient Greek History from the University of Pennsylvania (1965). She is a past president of the Conference on Latin American History and has been a member of the Executive Council of the American Historical Association. She was awarded the Cruz Oficial of the Order of Isabel la Católica by Juan Carlos, King of Spain, and is the author of books such as, Atlantic Empires: The Network of Trade and Revolution, 1713-1823 and Mexico Under Spain 1521-1556: Society and the Origins of Nationality.

Liss conceptualized, co-produced, and was historical adviser to the television documentary series, The Buried Mirror, a five-part series initially broadcast in 1992. Written and presented by the Mexican novelist and essayist, Carlos Fuentes, the series focused on the comprehensive history of Hispanic culture, from Spain to Latin America and from pre-Columbian times to the present, its history and culture, shared memories and diversities. The series was produced by Michael Gill of Malone-Gill Productions for Sogotel, S.A., in association with the Smithsonian Institution and Quinto Centenario España.
