This collection is a volume of correspondence as well as handwritten notes, lists of contributors to previous editions, and printed proof sheets, American science fiction anthologist and author Groff Conklin assembled while working on The Smart Set Anthology (1934), the first collection of stories from the literary magazine that was published from 1900 to 1930. Letters from publishers and authors consist of one piece of correspondence each with the exception of F. Scott Fitzgerald. One autograph letter and one typed letter signed from Fitzgerald concern the inclusion of his short story "Benediction" in the Anthology as well as others he had written for the magazine.

Collection Creator Biography:

Groff Conklin (1904-1968) was an American science fiction anthologist and author. Conklin began his career as an editor of fiction as an assistant manager at New York's Doubleday Bookstore. In 1929, he began circulating proposals for The Smart Set Anthology, the first collection of stories from the literary magazine, which he and Burton Rascoe published in 1934. (It was reissued in 1944 as The Bachelor's Companion.)
