Scope and Contents

Consists of a corrected typescript draft of a chapter titled "Classic Blues" ("Chapter VII") from Blues People: Negro Music in White America, published in 1963 by Amiri Baraka (as LeRoi Jones). Each page of the typescript has dozens of changes, showing Baraka's writing process. Several pages have entire paragraphs crossed out, and another page has the lyrics of a blues song, "Put It Right Here," with Baraka's notation to the editor to insert them.

The arrangement of how materials came to the Library has been maintained. Materials are arranged in the order in which they were accessioned.

Purchased from Glenn Horowitz, Bookseller, in 2021 (AM 2022-093).

Appraisal

No materials were removed from the collection during 2021-2022 processing beyond routine appraisal practices.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
