Collection Creator Biography:

Novo

Novo

Salvador Novo López was a Mexican poet, essayist, playwright and historian. He was born in Mexico City on July 30, 1904. During his stay at the National Preparatory School he met Xavier Villaurrutia, with whom he founded the magazine "Ulises" in which he published his first poems. Later, at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the National University of Mexico, he studied for a Master's Degree in Italian Language and Literature. After completing his studies, he obtained a teaching position in the Department of Foreign Languages at the Universidad Central.

In 1927 he founded, together with Xavier Villaurrutia, the experimental theater "Ulises" and the following year the magazine "Contemporáneos", which gave its name to the group of poets integrated by Jaime Torres Bodet, Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano, Enrique González Rojo, José Gorostiza, Gilberto Owen, Carlos Pellicer and Jorge Cuesta.

In 1941, Novo moved to Coyoacán. In 1946 the creation of the National Institute of Fine Arts was decreed, whose first director was the composer and orchestra conductor Carlos Chávez. Novo joined his work team and at the same time dedicated himself to writing several plays. Later, in 1953 he inaugurated his theater "La Capilla" and along with his theater he opened the bar "El Hábito" and the restaurant "El Refectorio". His work as a publicist, journalist and writer also led him to participate in cinema, radio and television. Between 1956 and 1957, his plays were televised in the program Telecomedia.

From 1965 onwards, his writing concentrated on the history of Mexico and he published an extensive chronicle on the artistic and intellectual life in Mexico. In 1965 he received the position of Chronicler of Mexico City and in 1967 he won the National Prize for Linguistics and Literature. Despite these awards and recognitions, Salvador Novo suffered social prejudice when he openly identified himself as a gay man in an intolerant society and was expelled from the National Preparatory School and from his position in the Ministry of Public Education.

In 1969 he suffered two heart attacks, so he retired from public activities and devoted himself to writing at his private home. He died on January 13, 1974.
