Concepción

Alma Concepción nació en la ciudad de Nueva York el 16 de enero de 1939 y luego se marchó con su familia a Santurce, Puerto Rico. Es hija del abogado y político Gilberto Concepción de Gracia y de la historiadora Ada Suárez Díaz. Concepción perteneció a Ballets de San Juan desde 1954 al cual estuvo vinculada por dieciséis años y donde fue primera solista. En 1958 bailó con la compañía de Carmen Amaya, y ese mismo año le otorgaron dos becas, una para Barnard College y la otra para la School of American Ballet. En la década de 1960 perteneció a los Ballets de Madrid del bailarín Antonio y luego, entre 1974 y 1982, fue integrante del Taller de Histriones, un colectivo de teatro-pantomima dirigido por Gilda Navarra. En 1973 fundó la Escuela de Baile Alma Concepción en Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, la cual dirigió por diez años. Se trasladó a New Jersey en 1982, donde sigue residiendo con su esposo, Arcadio Díaz-Quiñones, Profesor Emérito de la Universidad de Princeton. Fue profesora invitada en varias universidades incluyendo Rutgers y Princeton y también enseñó danza en el Ballet Hispánico of New York, New Jersey School of the Arts, Arts Council of Princeton, Mercer County High School for the Performing Arts y Princeton Ballet School. En este último formó el grupo Danza Española de Princeton dedicado a preservar y presentar los bailes tradicionales de España. Concepción también fundó el Taller de Danza de Trenton, NJ, una organización de trabajo voluntario dedicada principalmente a la enseñanza de los niños de la comunidad latina en la danza y el movimiento. Concepción

Alma Concepción was born in New York City on January 16, 1939 and later moved with her family to Santurce, Puerto Rico. She is the daughter of lawyer and politician Gilberto Concepción de Gracia and historian Ada Suárez Díaz. Concepción was part of Ballets de San Juan since 1954, to which she was affiliated for sixteen years and where she was the first soloist. In 1958 she danced with Carmen Amaya's company, and that same year she was awarded two scholarships, one to Barnard College and the other to the School of American Ballet. In the 1960s she belonged to the Ballets de Madrid of dancer Antonio and then, between 1974 and 1982, she was a member of the Taller de Histriones, a theater-pantomime collective directed by Gilda Navarra. In 1973 she founded the Alma Concepcion School of Dance in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, which she directed for ten years. She moved to New Jersey in 1982, where she continues to reside with her husband, Arcadio Díaz-Quiñones, Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. She was a guest lecturer at several universities including Rutgers and Princeton and also taught dance at the Ballet Hispánico of New York, New Jersey School of the Arts, Arts Council of Princeton, Mercer County High School for the Performing Arts and Princeton Ballet School. At the latter she formed the group Danza Española de Princeton dedicated to preserving and presenting the traditional dances of Spain. Concepcion also founded the Dance Workshop of Trenton, NJ, a volunteer work organization dedicated primarily to teaching children of the Latina/o community in dance and movement.
