Collection Description & Creator Information

Scope and Contents

Consists of 24 diaries kept by Maria P. Hedden of Edgartown, Massachusetts on Martha's Vineyard, and one diary kept by someone with the initials A. E. V. The diaries begin in 1892 and end in 1925, a couple days before her death on October 29. In addition to her diary for 1925, there is a second 1925 diary, in another hand, with the initials, A. E. V. on the cover, and which references Maria by her nickname. She did not keep her diaries every year across this 30 year span, and had two diaries for 1906, though one was very sparsely written in. Maria Hedden wrote in her diaries almost daily, usually writing brief entries spanning one to several lines. Her entries describe her daily activities, the weather, how she was feeling, and tracked birthdays, deaths, and other important dates. Some of the diaries contain accounts in their front and/or last pages.

Materials are arranged chronologically by year.
