Consists almost entirely of personal correspondence from Edward Cone to Frances Kleeman, with only one or two letters from other correspondents. There are a few newspaper clippings, event programs, articles, photographic prints, and one offprint of an article written by Edward Cone for the American Scholar that were shared as enclosures in the correspondence. There is a small amount of material relating to Edward Cone's passing, his estate, a scholarship that was set up in his name, and a donation given in his memory.

Frances Alice Kleeman (1918-2009) was an educator and translator. Born in New York City, she earned a bachelor's degree in music at Barnard College in 1938, and in 1940, a master's degree in music and musicology from Columbia University. She began her career in 1940 teaching music at Miss Fine's School in Princeton, N.J., which is likely where she met Edward T. Cone, a composer and faculty member at Princeton University. She taught music, German, and French at various schools from Baltimore, M.D. and Philadelphia, P.A. to Yokohama, Japan until her retirement in 1980.
Edward T. Cone was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on May 4, 1917. He earned a B.A. and a M.F.A. from Princeton University, studying under Roger Sessions, and afterward held a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at Princeton. In 1947, he joined the faculty, teaching music history, theory, and composition until 1985. Additionally, he was an Andrew D. White Professor-at-Large for Cornell University from 1979 until 1983. His other awards and distinctions include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Old Dominion Fellowship at Princeton, an ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award, and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Princeton.
Cone's musical compositions include a symphony and music for piano, voice, chorus, orchestra, and chamber ensembles. In addition to these works, he wrote several books: Musical Form and Musical Performance (1968), The Composer's Voice (1974), and Music: A View From Delft (1989).
Edward T. Cone died in Princeton on October 23, 2004.
