Scope and Contents

Journals related to the South African Communist Party, including 37 issues of The African Communist from 1960 through 1998; International Bulletin, nos. 3-5 (May 1962 through December 1963), plus a supplement "Rally and Unite Anti-Imperialist Forces: An Appeal from the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party"; SASPU National, Vol. 1 No. 4 (1990); SASPU Focus, Vol. 1, No. 3 (1990); Umsebenzi: Voice of the South African Communist Party, Vol. 4, No. 4 (4th Quarter 1988) through Vol. 6, No. 3 (3rd Quarter 1990), plus a special issue from November 1989; a bulletin containing "ANC's Interim Constitution" (African National Congress); and a small booklet The Road to South African Freedom – Programme of the South African Communist Party.

Arrangement

The materials are arranged in the creator's original order – in geographical groups with some exceptions where materials are grouped by format (posters or other oversize material) and by organizational group. Oversize materials remain in their original groups but have been housed separately due to their size.

Bernett Penka purchased the collection from its compiler, Paul Moussault.

Appraisal

The book "RVF: Het Rood Verzetsfront, in het vizier van de geheime dienst" was separated from the collection during 2024 processing.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
