George Catlin Letter, undated
Collection Overview
Collection Description & Creator Information
- Content Description
Manuscript letter signed "Geo. Catlin," addressed to "My Dear Sir," and written on three pages of a single folded sheet. The letter is about tickets Catlin presented to editors and other friends that have been loaned to others or lost. Catlin apologizes that he was not in when the addressee visited. He continues that his doorkeeper was following instructions and did not know the addressee. The letter is simply dated "Tuesday evening" below Catlin's signature.
A note penciled below the letter, in Elmer Adler's handwriting, reads: "Catlin opened his 'North American Indian Museum and Gallery' in the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly on Feb 1st, 1840. In 1845 the exhibition was moved to Paris. Removed to London in 1848."
