Nicolas Richard Papers, circa 1990-2024

This collection consists primarily of the annotated physical working copies and related digital files of French translator and novelist Nicolas Richard (1963-). These include more than 100 English language novels, story collections, biographies, correspondence, and non-fiction books – primarily by American writers – in which Richard has written his notes for the initial steps toward translation, including questions for the authors, commentary from professional colleagues, interrogations of the English originals, tabulation of pages per week required to meet his deadline, and other various details related to producing a French version of an English original.

A near comprehensive set of the published French language editions of each work translated by Richard is also included, some of which are also annotated by the translator who often gives talks and public programs on these translations and the authors translated. A number of the books are complemented by separate sheets of handwritten and typed notes, interviews, correspondence, Question & Answer sessions with the authors he translated, as well as with his fellow translators, writers, editors, and publishers.

Additionally, there are working files and extensive manuscript materials for three of Richard's novels, and approximately 105 physical copies of contracts for his translation work.
