Scope and Contents

This collection contains pamphlets, articles, bulletins, pronouncements, flyers, posters, and other miscellaneous items addressing a range of political issues in Peru, including the electoral process, electoral education, corruption, impunity, privatization, and rondas campesinas (sometimes translated as peasant patrollers). The material is produced by a variety of sources, including political parties and other entities that participated in the 2002 municipal and regional elections, various organizations and movements (including student and peasant) that have mobilized around specific causes, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), state entities (such as the Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales) and research institutes. The items were produced with a range of aims, including education, analysis, and the advancement of political agendas.

It is worthwhile to note the use of native languages as well as Spanish in File 4: Electoral education.

Researchers should note that in File 6: Anti-privatization campaigns, the great majority of material is related to proposals to privatize the hydroelectric sector. There is a particular emphasis on the anti-privatization movement in the Department of Arequipa, where civil protest has been most intense. While this file includes primarily pamphlet material from the opposition movements, it also contains several documents published by entities defending corporate and government interests.
