This series includes photographs taken and collected by Hamilton Fish Armstrong throughout his lifetime. The photographs have been arranged into two groupings according to size and then arranged alphabetically by subject. There are photographs of a personal nature in addition to photographs related to Armstrong's professional career with the Council on Foreign Relations, and his numerous travels dealing with matters of international relations. In many cases photographs were pulled from correspondence and other series, and thus relate very closely to the content of the Armstrong papers.

Perhaps the most significant photographs are contained in the folders for "Individuals." Many of these are portrait photographs signed by the individual to Armstrong, while others are photographs of the individual, often with other people. Many of these photographs were taken in conjunction with Council on Foreign Relations events. In almost every case the individuals are people of great importance in the realm of international affairs. An alphabetical list with dates, where known, is provided in the box and folder listing.

There are several folders on the Council on Foreign Relations. These photographs have been arranged alphabetically according to events at the Council and by subject. This is not a particularly large subseries as many of the photographs were removed and placed into the Individuals files.

The folders on Yugoslavia, a country with which Armstrong had many close ties, contain many photographs of the American Home for Yugoslav Children in Selce, Croatia founded by Mabel and Slavko Grouitch. Armstrong met Mabel Grouitch while at Princeton University and struck up an acquaintance. Armstrong visited the Home many times, and donated a boat to the Home which was named after his daughter, Gregor. The royal family of Yugoslavia was also closely connected with the Home, and there are photographs of the King and Queen. Hamilton Fish Armstrong and his wife, Helen, often visited the Home, and photographs of them are included as well. The researcher will also want to examine the materials in the American Home for Yugoslav Children subseries of the Organizations and Committees series.

The United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco (April-June 1945) is well documented. Included are photographs of the U.S. delegation, and photographs of the conference proceedings. There is also a folder containing two informal snapshot photographs of a League of Nations Special Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland in 1932 regarding the Manchurian Crisis.

The photographs of Princeton University offer an unprecedented glimpse of student life and traditions. There are photographs of students "horsing," the cane spree, and generally "goofing around." In addition there are photographs of Armstrong with friends during his Princeton years. Class of 1916, Daily Princetonian Board, and Cap and Gown Club photographs were transferred to the University Archives.

The Childhood and Family folder contains photographs of Armstrong, mainly from his childhood, although there are some later photographs. There are also photographs of his mother, sisters, and a group photograph in which one man is tentatively identified as Armstrong's father. Photographs of other family and relatives are also present. Photographs from other periods of Armstrong's life can be found in the Princeton University, World War I, and Portraits folders. The folder on Travels contains photographs of Armstrong and others during his yearly trips to Europe for various years between 1932 and 1968. These are mainly of a personal nature.
