- Description:
Kennan's papers document his career as a scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study and his time in the Foreign Service, and include his correspondence files, published and unpublished writings, and personal files. Many of the papers are related to his study of Russian history and foreign policy or his critical analysis of American foreign policy.

The Kennan Papers were originally on deposit at the Firestone Library of Princeton University.
- Archival Appraisal Information:
Duplicate writings and correspondence and routine medical records have been separated from this collection. Widely available published materials were separated from Series 5.

These papers were processed with the generous support of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).

- Conditions for Reproduction and Use:
Single photocopies may be made for research purposes. For quotations that are fair use as defined under U. S. Copyright Law, no permission to cite or publish is required. For those few instances beyond fair use, any copyright vested in the donor has passed to Princeton University and researchers are free to move forward with use of materials without anything further from Mudd Library. For materials not created by the donor, where the copyright is not held by the University, researchers are responsible for determining who may hold the copyright and obtaining approval from them. In these instances, researchers do not need anything further from the Mudd Library to move forward with their use. - Special Requirements for Access:
VHS tapes and audio cassette tapes of Kennan interviews, conference presentations, and television programs about Kennan are located in Series 3: Personal Files (Box 170-172 and Box 317). Access to this material follows the Mudd Manuscript Library policy for preservation and access to audiovisual materials.
Series 5 of this collection contains images in TIFF and JPEG formats acquired from a CD. Researchers are responsible for meeting the technical requirements needed to access these materials, including any and all hardware and software.
