Description:

Consists of papers of Merchant (Princeton Class of 1926)--correspondence, articles (mostly in printed sources), notes, speeches, statements, interviews, clippings, printed matter, and personal papers--primarily relating to his various positions as a diplomat at the American embassies in Paris (1945) and Nanking, China (1948), assistant secretary of state for Far Eastern affairs (1949), U.S. representative on the NATO Council in Paris (1952), assistant secretary of state for European affairs (1953-1956, 1958-1959), under secretary of state (1960-1961), and ambassador to Canada (1956-1958, 1961-1962). Included is material concerning summit conferences in Berlin (1954), Geneva (1955), and Paris (1960), relations with China and Japan, and American-Canadian relations during President Kennedy's administration, as well as letters and reviews about the book Neighbors Taken for Granted (1966), edited by Merchant.
