Abstract

140 b/w negatives as well as prints of the International Military Tribunal of the Far East taken by Nathan Kantrowitz of the Army photography unit, 1946-1947. The April 2009 Accrual contains prints and negatives of the Lower East Side and Little Italy, Manhattan, 1947.

Description:

The collection contains 140 b/w negatives as well as prints of the International Military Tribunal of the Far East taken by Nathan Kantrowitz of the Army photography unit, 1946-1947. Also includes street scenes of buildings, workers, and children in Tokyo. The April 2009 Accrual contains 19 prints and 24 negatives of the Lower East Side and Little Italy, Manhattan, 1947.

Collection Creator Biography:

Kantrowitz

Born in New York City in 1927, Nathan Kantrowitz was stationed in Occupied Japan with the Army's photography unit after WWII. During that time, he took photographs of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East. After his discharge, he earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago and conducted demographic and criminological research both in academia and in government. Kantrowitz retired from the New York City Planning Department in 1998.

These materials were received at Princeton as two accessions in March 2009 [ML.2009.006] and April 2009 [ML.2009.007].
