The collection is open for research with the following exceptions: correspondence between Colin Powell and Edward P. Djerejian shall be closed during their lifetimes, and specially-designated files shall be closed during Edward and Francoise Djerejian's lifetimes.

This collection has come to Princeton in small accessions, beginning in August 2011 with accession ML.2011.028, and continuing in 2012 with accessions ML.2012.007 and ML.2012.031.

 Processing Information

Preliminary processing was conducted by Maureen Callahan in 2011. A MARC record, box list, and finding aid were created at this time. For each of the 2012 accessions, a file list was created and the finding aid was updated at the time of accession. Materials in the July 2012 accession were moved into archival housing. Digital materials in Series 2 were processed by Elena Colon-Marreroin 2015

An addition to the collection was processed by Will Clements in 2025.

 Djerejian, Edward P. Biographical / Historical

Edward Djerejian is a career Foreign Service officer and former ambassador to both Syria and Israel, known for his expertise in Middle East diplomacy. Born in 1939 in New York City, Djerejian would graduate from Georgetown University in 1960 with a degree from the School of Foreign Service, before serving in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1961-1962. Djerejian joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1962, beginning as special assistant to Under Secretary of State George Ball. He went on to serve in diplomatic posts in Beirut and Casablanca, and from 1972-1975 served as executive assistant to Under Secretary of State Joseph Sisco.

During the 1970s, Djerejian also served in posts in Moscow and Bordeaux, France, as well as the Bureau of European Affairs. From 1981-1984, he was Deputy Chief of Mission in Jordan. In addition to his role as Deputy Press Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Djereijan also served as a Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs. From 1988-1991 he was U.S. Ambassador to the Syrian Arab Republic. From 1993-1994 Djerejian was U.S. Ambassador to Israel.

Djerejian assumed the role of director of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University in 1994, serving until his retirement in 2022. In 2006, at US Secretary of State Colin Powell's request, Djerejian joined the Iraq Study Group as a senior advisor. The group, chaired by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, was appointed by Congress to produce an assessment of the war in Iraq. Their report was published in December, 2006. From 2013-2015 Djerejian was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Occidental Petroleum Corporation. He was appointed Senior Fellow at the JFK School Belfer Center's Middle East Initiative at Harvard University in 2022.

Djerejian's book Danger and Opportunity: An American Ambassador's Journey Through the Middle East was published in 2008.
