Collection Creator Biography:

The Allied Mission to Observe Greek Elections--earlier Allied Mission for Observing Greek Elections (AMFOGE)--was established after the Governments of Britain, France, and the United States accepted on September 19, 1945 the Greek Government's invitation to send observers for the general elections and plebiscite to be held in 1946. On February 12, 1945, the signing of the Varkiza Agreement had put an end to the civil strife that ensued after the Axis Forces were driven from the country. The Varkiza Agreement followed the Yalta Declaration on Liberated Europe, in which the United States, Britain, and Russia assumed responsibility for assisting liberated nations "to form interim governmental authorities representative of all democratic elements in the population through free elections... and to facilitate where necessary the holding of such elections." The elections were held on March, 31, 1946.
