Collection Overview

Collection Description & Creator Information

Description:

This collection consists of photocopies of official records and news articles/clippings from the National Archives and Records Administration relating to government activities, activism, laws, and court cases in South Africa between 1967 and 1987. Princeton History Professor Jacob Dlamini obtained these documents as the result of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

These records document the political lanscape and resistance in South Africa during the later stages of Apartheid. Materials related to Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress (ANC) are included, specifically documents concerning the arrest of ANC members and the 1979 treason conviction and death sentence of ANC member James Mange. There are also documents illustrating efforts of the UN Centre Against Apartheid, as well as numerous other South African liberation enterprises.
