Abstract
The Film Stills Collection consists of stills and publicity portraits of actors and actresses in the American film industry.

This collection consists of approximately 20,000 stills and publicity portraits of actors and actresses in the American film industry covering almost eighty years, including autographed pictures.
Photographers include but are not limited to: Man Ray, Jack Freulich, George Hurrell, Alexander Kahle, Eric Carpenter, Gene Robert Richee, Clarence Sinclair Bull, Otto Dyar, Sergis Alberts Hoover, W. J. Gray, Robert W. Coburn, Chris Marie Meeker, Jack Shalitt, Don English, Ernest A. Bachrach, William E. Thomas, Walter Frederick Seely, Gaston Longet, Scotty Welbourne, G. E. Richardson, Bert Stern, Ned Scott, C. Heighton Monroe, Elwood Bredell, Fred Hendrickson, James Hargis Connelly, Schellenberg, C. Kenneth Lobben, and Albert Witzel.
- Arrangement
The collection has been organized alphabetically by actor or film title; general "actors" folders (for example, "Ti-Tz") have been interfiled alphabetically.
Note: Photographs of actors with "See" references have not been filed under their names; the photos have been filed where indicated. Photographs of those with "See also" references have been filed under their names as well as where indicated. Be sure to also check the general "actors" folders (such as "A-Az") for specific actors who were not foldered separately.
Collection History
- Acquisition:
Much of the collection was put together by O. R. Tillinghast, who was associated with the movie industry from about 1918 to 1955, most of the time as a publicity agent. This part was purchased from a California dealer in 1970.

Single photocopies may be made for research purposes. No further photoduplication of copies of material in the collection can be made when Princeton University Library does not own the original. - Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
