Typescript of "The Negro in the Western World Theatre" by Randolph Edmonds, circa late 1940s

A typescript of an unpublished book, Randolph Edmond's "definitive history of the Negro in the theatre." In the brief Acknowledgements section, Edmonds references a grant-in-aid by a Research Committee at Florida A College where he was teaching. A Forward was to have been written by Allardyce Nicoll, then a Professor of the History of Drama at the University of Birmingham in England. Some of the chapters include, "White Playwrights and Negro Characters," "White Actors in Blackface," "The Negroes Own Efforts," "Negro Stereotypes," "Negro Bands and Jazz," "The Negro Little Theatre Movement," and other chapters on radio, motion pictures, and music and dance in theatre.

Manzanar Cooperative Enterprises, Inc., Panoramic Photograph of a Concentration Camp in Manzanar, California, circa 1943-1945

Consists of a large panoramic photograph of the Manzanar War Relocation Center, a concentration camp in Manzanar, California, where the United States government incarcerated Japanese Americans during World War II. The image was taken from a tower along the fence line of the camp, likely by an outside photographer, as incarcerated people were not allowed to have cameras. The photograph is copyrighted by Manzanar Cooperative Enterprises, Inc., an organization owned, operated, and managed by the Japanese Americans incarcerated in the concentration camp, per an agreement with the War Relocation Authority dated March 1, 1943. It was likely commissioned by the cooperative and printed by a Japanese American photographic developer, probably Tōyō Miyatake.

Photographs of Manzanar War Relocation Center, circa 1942-1945

Consists of 11 photographs of the Manzanar War Relocation Center taken by Tōyō Miyatake while he was incarcerated there during World War II. Subjects include camp buildings, the camp entrance sign, and fellow incarcerees. Miyatake and Ansel Adams included several of these images in a collaborative exhibit and a book published in 1978. These images were printed after the war and stamped with the name of the studio Miyatake opened in 1947.

The Hamilton Fish Armstrong Papers consist of correspondence, notebooks, memoranda, material from 1945 United Nations Conference on International Organization, writings especially in relation to Peace and Counterpeace and Tito and Goliath, diaries, scrapbooks, and photographs. The papers document Armstrong's career as editor of Foreign Affairs, his participation in the activities of the Council on Foreign Relations, and his professional involvement and interest in foreign policy from World War I through the 1970s. Included is correspondence with many well known political and literary figures of the time period. Some materials of a personal nature are included but the bulk of the papers relates to Armstrong's professional life. The papers also document Armstrong's participation in many philanthropic activities associated with Yugoslavia.

Frances de Chollet (1900-1994) assisted Allen Dulles with obtaining the diaries of Galeazzo Ciano, the Foreign Minister of Italy from 1936-1943, from Ciano's wife, Edda, who was also the daughter of Benito Mussolini. The collection is mostly composed of correspondence written to Frances de Chollet from Edda Ciano, though letters from Allen Dulles and other correspondents are included to a lesser extent. The collection also contains a small amount of de Chollet's notes documenting her face-to-face meetings with Edda Ciano.

Folder 1 contains the following groupings: seventeen letters, circa 1945-1949 (all letters beginning with "Chère Violette Leduc"); twenty-three "rendez-vous" Letters, circa 1949-1971 (beginning "Chère Violette" and "Ma chère Violette"), which are short letters making appointments to meet at cafes or at Beauvoir's home; and two undated letters. The Robert F. Goheen Papers contain records that Robert F. Goheen kept mainly before and after he was president of Princeton University (1957-1972). They include files Goheen kept as a graduate student, instructor and professor in Princeton University's Department of Classics for the period 1939-1957. The collection also contains U.S. army records for 1942-1945, when Goheen had interrupted his studies for service in the Second World War, and for 1945-1956, when he served in the Officers Reserve Corps. The majority of the files concern Goheen's post-presidential years, when he was Chair of the Council on Foundations (1972-1977), Ambassador to India (1977-1980), and Director of the Mellon Fellowships in the Humanities (1981-1998), as well as Senior Fellow Public and International Affairs at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School. Eisenhower, had a long and distinguished public career with significant impact upon the formulation of United States foreign policies. He was especially involved with efforts to establish world peace after World War I, the role of the United States in world governance, and Cold War relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Dulles papers document his entire public career and his influence on the formation of United States foreign policy, especially for the period when he was Secretary of State, and include his correspondence files, as well as his writings, reports, and memorabilia.

The Records of United Service to China, Inc., known from 1941 to 1946 as United China Relief, Inc., document the activities of the organization from the early formation in 1940 to its official consolidation with the American Bureau for Medical Aid to China in 1966. In addition there is a limited amount of material from other Chinese relief agencies that predate the founding of United China Relief / United Service to China. The Records focus on UCR/USC attempts to raise money in the United States, to educate Americans about China and the Chinese people, and to carry on relief work in China. The collection consists primarily of correspondence among the various individuals and agencies involved with UCR/USC, along with other material produced by the agency, such as minutes and publicity material. In addition, the collection includes a series of photographs dealing with China during the 1940s and efforts in the United States to raise money for China during the same period.

The Council on Books in Wartime Records (1942-1947), an organization of publishers and other literary professionals focusing on the promotion of books and reading to further the war effort, consists of records from the preliminary foundation meetings at Times Hall, New York, through the cessation of formal operations in 1946. The major activities of the organization were focused on its two subsidiary publishing ventures, the Armed Services Editions (1943-1947) and the Overseas Editions, Inc. (1944-1945). The Records consist primarily of correspondence of council members, publishers, printers, booksellers, librarians, and the general public. Also present are meeting minutes, press releases, bulletins, radio scripts, contracts, financial records, letters from servicemen, a few photographs of authors and council members, newspaper clippings, and posters. At its last annual meeting in January 1946 the Council's Board of Directors determined that at the end of operations "such records of the Council as merit preservation shall be deposited in an appropriate public institution such as Princeton University Library." The Records were subsequently acquired by Princeton University Library and then librarian Julian P. Boyd.

Félix Candela was an influential Spanish-born architect and structural engineer, known for his innovative designs using reinforced thin-shell concrete to create the highly efficient hyperbolic parabaloid shapes used in his construction of many well-known churches, factories, and other buildings, primarily in and around Mexico City in the mid-20th century. The collection consists of professional and personal papers, including photographic files documenting his projects, architectural drawings and designs, drafts of lectures and published papers, correspondence, appointment books, student notebooks and artwork, personal photographs and albums, awards and certificates, architectural reference books and magazines, construction materials catalogs, and clippings on various architecture and design topics and on Candela's own work.

Subseries 4D: Personal Photographs, circa 1915-2000

This subseries contains personal and travel photographs of Félix Candela, often with his family, including early black-and-white photographs, contemporary color photographs, occasional negatives and slides, and several photograph albums. Early photographs albums from the 1920s-1940s show Candela as a young athlete during his school days in Spain, as well as his trips throughout Spain and Mexico with his first wife, Eladia Martín, and their family. Prior to the Spanish Civil War, Candela was a competitive athlete in Spain, playing for the national rugby team and winning championships in both pole-vaulting and ski-jumping. Of note in this subseries is a group of photographs showing Candela competing in these and other sports, including skiing, mountain-climbing, pole-vaulting, and rugby. Also present are travel shots of Candela in later years, often accompanied by his wife, Dorothy Candela, also an architect, in locations such as British Guiana, the United States, Spain, Iran, Peru, Argentina, Armenia, Bulgaria, and England. Candela's interest in regional design styles is also reflected in his travel photographs, which include many shots of local architecture, ruins, and churches in the various countries he visited. Photographs of Candela at several gallery openings and exhibitions are also present, along with photographs of him with other architects, including Fernando Higueras.

Jeffrey E. Fuller Papers, 1941-1970

Jeffrey Fuller (1917-1970) worked for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) from 1948 to 1966 and also served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Fuller's papers document his service in the U.S. military and his work for the ACLU and include his personal and professional correspondence, memoranda, and diaries.

Professor Ansley J. Coale (1917-2002) was a demographer whose work focused on nuptiality, fertility, and mortality in several countries. Coale joined the Princeton University faculty in 1947 and spent his entire career as a member of the university's Office of Population Research (OPR). The papers contain correspondence, Coale's research papers and projects, and samples of data collected. The material spans the several decades (1950s to 1990s) Coale spent as a member of the Princeton faculty, as well as the work he did during his retirement.

Ragnar Nurkse (1907-1959) was a leading scholar of international economics, international finance and economic development. He served in the League of Nations from 1934 to 1945 and taught at Columbia University from 1945 to 1958. Nurse's papers document his scholarly work at both the League of Nations and Columbia, and includes his research notes, drafts of articles and books, research materials and a small amount of correspondence.

The Department of Oriental Studies was formed at Princeton University in the spring of 1927 as the Department of Oriental Languages and Literature. It offered an interdisciplinary curriculum centered on the study of the Arabic, Turkish, and Persian languages and the regions in which they were spoken until 1969, when it was reorganized into the separate Departments of Near Eastern Studies and East Asian Studies. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, printed materials, course syllabi, and other materials which document the activities of the department and it's faculty inside and outside of the classroom.
