Juan Gelman (1930-2014) was an Argentine poet, translator, journalist, and human rights activist. The Records of the Association on American Indian Affairs document the corporate life of an influential and resilient player in the history of twentieth-century Native American advocacy. From its formation by non-Indians in New York in 1922 to its re-establishment in South Dakota in 1995 under a wholly Indian administration, the AAIA has defended the rights and promoted the welfare of Native Americans and, in this process, has shaped the views of their fellow citizens. The AAIA has waged innumerable battles over the years, touching on the material and spiritual well-being of Indians in every state of the Union: from the right of Native Americans to control their resources to their right to worship freely; from their right to federal trusteeship to their right to self-determination. The evolving nature of this struggle, in terms of conception and execution; the environment in which it was waged, both within and without the AAIA; the parade of men and women who figured in it; and the relationships among them can all be found in the abundant and insightful records which constitute these Records. The correspondence, minutes, reports, articles, clippings, and other documents in the collection, augmented by photographic and audiovisual material, represent a window not only on the AAIA but on the entities and personalities with which it interacted. While its vision has co-existed with others, and while it has been far from alone in its contribution to Indian life, no consideration of twentieth-century Native American affairs can disregard its arduous and, for the most part, fruitful work.

Granville Austin (1927-2014) was an independent scholar and political historian known for his work on India's constitution. The collection is composed of Granville Austin's research files on India, mostly in the form of published articles or book excerpts that Austin collected and often annotated. The majority of the research files, notes and drafts relate to Austin's second book, Working a Democratic Constitution, but some files relate to his first book, The Indian Constitution: Cornerstone of a Nation. Topics documented in the collection include the Indian constitution, center-state relations in India, Indian politicians and political parties, U.S. foreign relations with India, cases tried before the Indian Supreme Court, and various other subjects related to India's political and legal systems. Most of the printed material in Box 6 is stamped as a gift from Austin to South Asia Studies at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and includes occasional underlining or annotation by Austin. Subjects of the printed material include the Indian Parliament and elections, Indian politics, law, constitution and judicial system, education, the press, foreign policy and strategy, Pakistan and Kashmir. Pamphlets include the Alladi Diary by Professor Alladi Ramakrishnan. This newsreel about Princeton's Bicentennial, part of a set of Paramount newsreels, includes footage of President Harry Truman, Albert Einstein, and Dwight Eisenhower, who received honorary degrees, as well as of guests Herbert Hoover and the widows of Grover Cleveland and of Woodrow Wilson. The newsreel includes a fragment of a speech by President Harry S. Truman, urging for the adoption of universal military training. Sergio Ramírez has been a leading Nicaraguan author and politician. In 1977 Ramírez became head of the "Group of Twelve", a group of prominent intellectuals who supported the struggle of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) against the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle. With the triumph of the Revolution in 1979, he became part of the Junta of the Government of National Reconstruction and in 1984 he was elected vice-president under Daniel Ortega. He also served as president of the New York City Board of Education (1968-1969) and as president of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Development and Services Corporation (1967-1973). The collection primarily documents Doar's tenure with the Civil Rights Division in the form of court records, investigation files, correspondence, and notes, though materials from Doar's time on the Watergate impeachment inquiry committee and on the Board of Education are also present. The Regional Offices series documents the work and administration of the ACLU's three regional offices: Mountain States Regional Office, concerned with civil rights in the west and Native American rights, the Southern Regional Office, focusing on civil rights in the south, and the Washington, D.C. office, which concentrates on national legislation and the actions of the federal government. The files include correspondence, case files, office publications, research files, and the papers of individual staff members. Don Oberdorfer (1931-2015) worked as a journalist for nearly four decades; twenty-five of those years were as a staff member at the Washington Post, where he served as White House correspondent (1968-1972), Northeast Asia correspondent (1972-1975), and diplomatic correspondent (1976-1993). The collection is mostly composed of Oberdorfer's notebooks that chronicle his assignments with the Post, as well as his work post-retirement. The collection also consists of transcripts of interviews conducted by Oberdorfer with both American and Soviet foreign policy officials for his book The Turn: From the Cold War to a New Era, The United States and the Soviet Union, 1983-1990 (Poseidon Press, 1991, and Touchstone Press, 1992). Additionally, the papers contain a significant amount of research material and writings related to Oberdorfer's career, foreign policy actions taken by the United States and the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, and the political climate of Japan and Korea from the late 1960s into the early twenty-first century.

Writings, circa 1957-2006

This series of materials consists primarily of drafts of Mills' poetry and prose, as well as essay drafts, autobiographical pieces, short stories, reflections, a radio play script, fragments, notes, lists, and numerous drafts of correspondence. Some of these draft letters were addressed to Peter Quartermaine, Robin Crozier, Alan Halsey, Adrian Mitchell, Marjorie Perlof, Jonathan Williams, and Pia Simig, among several others. A small portion of the notes and fragments pertain to novel ideas that Mills was developing and researching. The essays pertain to the works of poets and artists (e.g. Ian Hamilton Finlay, Roy Fisher, David Prentice, and Peter Berry), as well as broader topics, such as the "world of little magazines." Additional materials pertaining to Mills' writing include mockups and layouts of works such as poetry booklets and maquettes, but most significantly the board mockups of "30 Signatures to Silver Catches" by Ian Hamilton Finlay, Margot Sandeman, and Stuart Mills, which Tarasque Press printed in 1971 and also likely put on exhibition. To a lesser extent, the series also contains drawings, paintings, and collages; a small amount of teaching notes; and material related to to Tarasque, Aggie Weston's, and Poet's Poems. Mills' drawing of the Tarasque bird that became the magazine's front cover design is in this series. Some of these publications-related materials include catalogue lists, a note to subscribers, and planning notes.
