The Records of the Association on American Indian Affairs document the corporate life of an influential and resilient player in the history of twentieth-century Native American advocacy. From its formation by non-Indians in New York in 1922 to its re-establishment in South Dakota in 1995 under a wholly Indian administration, the AAIA has defended the rights and promoted the welfare of Native Americans and, in this process, has shaped the views of their fellow citizens. The AAIA has waged innumerable battles over the years, touching on the material and spiritual well-being of Indians in every state of the Union: from the right of Native Americans to control their resources to their right to worship freely; from their right to federal trusteeship to their right to self-determination. The evolving nature of this struggle, in terms of conception and execution; the environment in which it was waged, both within and without the AAIA; the parade of men and women who figured in it; and the relationships among them can all be found in the abundant and insightful records which constitute these Records. The correspondence, minutes, reports, articles, clippings, and other documents in the collection, augmented by photographic and audiovisual material, represent a window not only on the AAIA but on the entities and personalities with which it interacted. While its vision has co-existed with others, and while it has been far from alone in its contribution to Indian life, no consideration of twentieth-century Native American affairs can disregard its arduous and, for the most part, fruitful work.

This series documents George McGovern's activities as the director of the Food for Peace Program (1961-1962) and United States Senator (1962-1980). Of special interest are files documenting McGovern's activities as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Indian Affairs of the Senate Committe on Interior and Insular Affairs (1967-1972) and as Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs (1969-1970, 1973-1977) and its successor, the Subcommittee on Nutrition of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry (1978-1980). In addition, the series contains documentation pertaining to McGovern's activities as chairman of the Subcommittee on Agricultural Credit and Rural Electrification (1971-1976) and the Subcommittees on South Asian Affairs (1973-1974) and Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs (1975-1977). Don Oberdorfer (1931-2015) worked as a journalist for nearly four decades; twenty-five of those years were as a staff member at the Washington Post, where he served as White House correspondent (1968-1972), Northeast Asia correspondent (1972-1975), and diplomatic correspondent (1976-1993). The collection is mostly composed of Oberdorfer's notebooks that chronicle his assignments with the Post, as well as his work post-retirement. The collection also consists of transcripts of interviews conducted by Oberdorfer with both American and Soviet foreign policy officials for his book The Turn: From the Cold War to a New Era, The United States and the Soviet Union, 1983-1990 (Poseidon Press, 1991, and Touchstone Press, 1992). Additionally, the papers contain a significant amount of research material and writings related to Oberdorfer's career, foreign policy actions taken by the United States and the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War, and the political climate of Japan and Korea from the late 1960s into the early twenty-first century.

Notebooks, 1978-2008 February

The notebooks from Oberdorfer's journalism career are especially significant for their detailed notes and commentary on his travels abroad. The notebooks chronicle his many trips with Secretary of State George P. Shultz to Asia from 1983-1988; to the Middle East in 1983 and 1987; to the Soviet Union in 1987; and to other locations. Oberdorfer's trip with Secretary of State James Baker to Asia in November 1991 is also included. Additional travels documented in the notebooks include, but are not limited to, Oberdorfer's trips to the Soviet Union in 1978, January 1984, and April 1987; to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras in 1982; to Germany in 1983; and to the Middle East in 1985. He also made a number of trips to Korea, Japan, and China from 1987-1991. Oberdorfer's additional travels to Korea, Japan, and China after his retirement and his attendance at a variety of domestic and international conferences, mostly on the governments of Asia or on the Cold War, are also documented.

Series 4, General, 1944-2012

Series 4, General, 1944-2012 reflects Becker's personal activities. Becker used his financial and analytical skills throughout his career. He created a small file of his position papers, included are documents for the Investment Bankers Association of America, John J. Gilhooley during his bid for New York City Comptroller in 1961, and the Critical Issues Council directed by Milton Eisenhower. Some of these position papers can be found elsewhere in the series, for example the paper on the position of comptroller is found in the portfolio assembled by Becker and within the John Gilhooley correspondence. Other writings in this series include the foreign press reviews from Becker's Army service in the mid-1950s, and a manuscript entitled "Selling Municipal Bonds."

The Microfilm Subseries contains correspondence, documents, newspapers, and writings of Wilson and others which had been microfilmed by various repositories and purchased by the editorial staff for reference and inclusion in the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Project. Repositories from which significant amounts of reels were purchased include the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the London Public Records Office, Princeton University, and Yale University. This subseries is closely related to Subseries 1C: Miscellaneous Photocopies, in that similar types of materials are included in both subseries, although there is little or no overlapping content.

The papers of William A. Eddy (1896-1962), educator, diplomat, minister to Saudi Arabia, intelligence agent, and college president, focus on his presidency of Hobart College (1936-1941), his work in U.S. - Middle East policy, and his family life in the period from 1917-1962. The holdings of his personal and family correspondence is extensive. The collection contains all correspondence from his term as president of Hobart College, 1936-1941. Many military documents are included, especially in the years 1941-1946 (the planning of the North African landings, the FDR/Ibn Saud meeting, the Treaty of the Yemen). There are many geneological papers and letters from Eddy's relatives concerning American missionary work in the Middle East. There are numerous publications concerning 18th C. English literature, religious and civic duties, U.S. Foreign policy re Israel and the Arabs, and sociological accounts of the Middle East. The collection is composed of personal/professional correspondence, documents, diaries and notebooks, addresses, publications, manuscripts of Eddy's books and articles (including unpublished MSs), scrapbooks, photographs, negatives, and memorabilia.

Series 2: Biographical, 1912-2008

The Biographical series contains materials regarding Baker's career and life and includes articles, interviews and oral histories, his diaries, awards and appointments, family correspondence, photographs, and weekly schedules for his retirement years. The articles include papers written by and about Baker regarding his life, as well as materials collected by A. Michael Noll on three CDs. The earlier diaries include references to his research at Bell Labs, while diaries beginning in the 1950s are predominantly concerned with his daily life. The awards and appointments materials include awards certificates, correspondence about accepted the awards and congratulations, his acceptance speeches, programs, and articles. Most awards are from academic and professional organizations or corporations for his contributions to science, from government agencies for his service, and honorary degrees from universities. The photographs include portraits of Baker, Baker receiving awards, at events, or with members of boards he served on, and personal photographs of unidentified people and landscapes. The weekly schedules record meetings and events that Baker attended, and also include correspondence about the events, itineraries, and expenses.

The collection primarily documents Doar's tenure with the Civil Rights Division in the form of court records, investigation files, correspondence, and notes, though materials from Doar's time on the Watergate impeachment inquiry committee and on the Board of Education are also present. The photographs were taken during a 1946 studio tour given by actress Ri- Ko-Ran (Yoshiki Yamaguchi), and there is a description of the other people in the photograph written by participant Dick Thomas in 2008. Also included in the folder are two CD-ROMS of the tour, sent by Thomas in 2008.

Meyers List, Inc., Records, 1911-2005

Incorporated as The Melody Company by Abraham Meyers in 1911, the firm was purchased in 1967 by Princeton alumnus Charles H. Rose (Class of 1950) and his wife. By offering comic strips--the plates for printing them--to small newspapers, the firm was able to secure advertising space, which it sold to national advertisers seeking wider, more regional coverage. Advertisers knew the firm as The Meyers List; newspapers knew it as International Cartoons Limited. The company was dissolved on 20 March 1997, and its printing plates were distributed to various museums and repositories, including Princeton University. Consists of assorted records of the American Melody Company and its corporate aliases (Meyers List Inc. and International Cartoons Limited), including minute and stock books, corporate seals, scrapbooks of cartoon strips, copies of contracts with advertisers, trademark registrations, and dissolution documents.
