The Ernest Cushing Richardson subseries contains the records of Vinton's successor, who held the position from 1890-1920. As University Librarian during World War I, Richardson devoted considerable energy to Princeton's participation in the American Library Association's War Service Library program. This topic is represented by several folders of material within the subseries. A related folder documents the difficulties of the Library in obtaining books and periodicals produced in Germany both during and after the war.

The Julian Parks Boyd subseries contains the records of Julian Parks Boyd, who was Princeton's University Librarian 1940-1952. His tenure was a period of immense growth in the Library, both in terms of collections and facilities. As with the records of earlier University Librarians, these records contain correspondence and subject files pertaining to acquisitions, budgets, and other routine administrative matters. This series is also notable however for its illustration of the Library's growing importance to the University, as conveyed by the records which pertain to the planning and construction of Firestone Library, found primarily in the Cooperative Committee on Library Buildings files (Box 26-27).

The University Librarian series contains the records of the various individuals who have held the position and provide an overview of the Library's historical development from the vantage point of one of the few roles that have remained relatively static throughout the Library's entire existence. As the chief administrator of the Library, the University Librarian is involved to some extent in nearly every aspect of the institution's planning and evolution. This is especially true in the earlier years of the Library when activities later undertaken by separate departments were somewhat more centralized around the Librarian. Such diversity of purpose is represented in the University Librarian records themselves, which primarily contain correspondence, subject files, and other documentation relating to topics as varied as collection development, finances, fundraising, organizational and staff matters, and university policy. Please see subseries descriptions for further information regarding the individual subseries.
Folder
The Administrative Offices subseries consists of miscellaneous reports, memos, and correspondence between Library administration pertaining primarily to inter-Library matters. Some of the documents in this subseries also relate to external topics such as the Research Library Group. In general, the records found in this series can be considered supplementary to those found in Series 1.

The Collections and Divisions subseries consists of records pertaining to several of the subordinate divisions which comprise the Department of Collections. Included are the Cotsen Children's Library, the Graphic Arts Collection, the Parrish Collection, the Scheide Library, and the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library. The records consist primarily of correspondence and other materials related to these collections/division. Several of these RBSC subdivisions were borne of private collections, and as such this subseries contains some correspondence and other material pertaining to the figures associated with them. This is particularly true in the case of the Graphic Arts Collection (Elmer Adler) and the Scheide Library (John H. Scheide).

First organized in 1948-49, the Department has oversight of the Library's holdings of rare books, manuscripts, graphic arts, and numismatics, as well as several other special collections such as the University Archives, the Public Policy papers, and the Cotsen Children's Library. The origins of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections extend nearly to the beginning of the Library, and much of this material predates the official formation of RBSC as a unit. Other records concerning the early Department of Rare Books and Special Collections can be found in Subseries 1D: Julian Parks Boyd. Please see subseries descriptions for further information regarding the individual subseries.

The catalogues, lists, and accession records series consists of bound volumes and other materials which document the growth and classification of the University Library's collection. Included are early accession books, classed lists which employ the Richardson Call Number system, alphabetical and shelf lists, holding inventories, and gift acquisition records (known as DeLong lists, after their compiler). Also included in this subseries are several finding lists for the Princeton Theological Seminary Library collection. The volumes cover the acquisition of works; their disposition to various special libraries on campus; their use and circulation; and other miscellaneous topics related to the collections, or even to the Library itself (as in "Appraised Valuation of the Furnishing of the University Library, Princeton University, 1911").

The Shelf Lists, Accession Records, and Inventories series contains records that document the library's collections, primarily in ways that relate to the physical location of volumes on the library's shelves. The Shelf Lists group volumes together according to loosely formed topics. Although these lists are undated, they almost certainly refer to the shelves of the Pyne and Chancellor Green libraries. The Holdings Inventories fulfill a similar purpose, though for a later period when the classification system had become more complex. The DeLong Lists are lists of gifts to the library compiled by E. DeLong of the Acquisitions Department.
