Series 12: Princeton And Local Relations, 1955-1972

- Scope and Contents
Series 12: Princeton And Local Relations, 1952-1972 (bulk 1957-1972) concerns the relationship between Princeton University and the local community and its officials, organizations, businesses, and schools. The pre-1962 records were originally part of two separate series: 'Princeton Municipal (Borough and Township)' and 'Local Relations'.
The series reflects the tensions between "town and gown" and the precarious balance between needs and support on both sides. Of particular interest in this respect are the general files, which include correspondence about problems since 1959. These include the perceived lack of understanding among taxpayers about the University's financial contributions to the Borough and Township through real estate taxes and other means. In addition, the files document the conflicts arising from the rapid physical expansion of the University and the corresponding growth of the community. Indicative of the problems and solutions sought are the "Plan for Improving the Local Public Opinion of Princeton University" (March, 1963), the widely distributed pamphlet "The University in the Princeton Community" (1965), and the establishment in 1967 of the Office of University Relations (in 1970 renamed 'Community and Regional Relations').
The conflicting and mutual interests relating to the 1960s expansion of town and University, and the administration's involvement with Borough and Township, is further documented in the files on 'Princeton Municipal Improvements, Inc. (PMI),' 'Princeton Community Housing', 'Roads and Streets,' and 'Zoning.' More information about specific subjects in this series, as well as about the subject of "town and gown" in general, may be found in the Historical Subject Files (AC#109 and the records of the Communications Office (AC#168).
