Collection Overview

Collection Description & Creator Information

Scope and Contents

The Russell papers contain drafts and carbon copies of some 13,000 letters which Russell wrote over the years 1908 - 1950 (approx.). These letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent. Correspondents include not only individuals, but businesses, scientific societies, schools and divisions of Princeton University. Letters to individuals filed under corporate entries may be located by consulting the file of white cards in the manuscripts catalogue. For example, looking in the cross-reference file under the name of R.A. Gregory, one finds a card which reads as follows:

Gregory, R.A.

Nature

in 10/8/29

out 10/18/29

This card indicates that the file of incoming correspondence labeled "Nature" contains a letter from Gregory to Russell dated October 8, 1929. Similarly, in the outgoing correspondence under "Nature" there is a letter from Russell to Gregory dated October 18, 1929. Additional letters to and from Gregory might be found under his name.

Manuscripts by Russell found amidst outgoing correspondence have been removed to the series of Russell manuscripts. Letters found with manuscripts and research notes have been removed to the correspondence files. A notation in the upper right hand corner of a letter indicates the manuscript or notes with which it was found.

Arrangement

Arranged alphabetically by correspondent.

I thank him and his colleagues at the Center for History of Physics for their encouragement and practical suggestions. I also am indebted to Charlotte Moore Sitterly, not only for her bibliography of Russell's publications but for generous answers to my inquiries. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the hospitality of the staff of Mudd Manuscripts Library. Finally, John O'Rourke deserves thanks for his help in arranging the papers, and so does Eve Thompson for typing this guide.
