- Scope and Contents
The collection consists of several holograph addresses of Cleveland, miscellaneous correspondence, and photographs. Over 400 original shorthand letters dictated by Cleveland to Julian B. Beaty, a Princeton student (1902-1906) working his way through college with stenography and typing, with Beaty's typed transcriptions, form a large part of the collection. Beaty grouped the transcriptions under various subject headings. Additional original letters to Beaty by both Cleveland and his wife, Frances, are included.
Among other material are an early letter (1860) by Cleveland to his sister Sue, revealing his devotion and sense of family obligation; a letter (1885) to Cleveland by George Bruski, his substitute in the Civil War, asking for Cleveland to make his life a little easier for the rest of his days; a rational plea from a Sing Sing prisoner to have his case reviewed; and over 200 photographs of mostly family scenes and residences.
Other correspondents of Cleveland and his wife include William L. Patten, Judge William Strong, and Andrew Fleming West.
