The collection consists of papers of Swydan, including correspondence (personal and business, some in Russian), family photographs and negatives, documents, several embroidered floral and Arabic calligraphy pieces, writings, maps, and newspaper clippings.

Collection Creator Biography:

Swydan, Shokri K.

Swydan was a Syrian journalist who emigrated to the United States in 1909. He served as secretary of the Russian Imperial Orthodox Society and the United Syrian Christian Association of North America, and founded a business, S. Swydan and Sons, Russian traders, in Worchester, Mass.

Acquisition:

Gift of James Weinberger in March 2012 (AM2012-76).

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
