Scope and Contents

Consists of letters from Charles Tuckerman to the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs (Athens); a copy of a letter to Dēmētrios Botsarēs (Corfu); and C. K. Tuckerman to "those of his countrymen who are now in Athens", about the day of National Thanksgiving (Athens). The rest of the incoming correspondence comprises autographed letters to Charles Tuckerman from miscellaneous politicians, writers, journalists and other dignitaries, including: "To my dear Charley on his Birth day," 11 March 1829 (three quatrains, inscribed on verso: "For Charles K. Tuckerman"; Rufus Choate; François Guizot (Paris); Bishop Alexander Viets Griswold, (Boston); Alexander Baring, 1st Baron Ashburton (New York); Lydia Huntley Sigourney (Hartford); Thomas Chalmers (Edinburgh); Abbott Lawrence (London); George Payne Rainsford James (Hell Gate); William Courtenay, 10th Earl of Devon; Sir John Bowring (Government House); Francis Napier, 10th Lord Napier and 1st Baron Ettrick (Washington); John Bird Sumner, Archbishop of Canterbury (Lambeth); [signed illegibly: John Rensen?] to C. K. Tuckerman (Hong Kong); Francis Napier, 10th Lord Napier and 1st Baron Ettrick (Washington); copy of Andrew Johnson's letter introducing Charles K. Tuckerman to King George of Greece (Washington); William H. Seward, Secretary of State (Washington); Leōnidas Meletopoulos [Athens]; George Peabody, American financier and philanthropist (London); Alexandros Rizos Rangabes, first Greek ambassador to Washington (Washington D.C.); Dēmētrios Botsarēs, son of the Greek hero Markos Botsarēs (Corfu) written in French; Ioannis Pappadiamantopoulos, aide-de-camp to King George I (invitation) (Athens). There is also a letter from William Ellery Channing to Joseph Tuckerman and a letter from Andrew Mitchell to John B. Heming (Glasgow).

The second folder contains autographed letters signed by the following, among others: Markos Antōnios Rodostamos, Palace [Athens]; Whitelaw Reid, American politician and newspaper editor (New York); Edwin Lawrence Godkin, American journalist and newspaper editor about W. Stillman, (New York); S. J. Cassimati to C. K. Tuckerman, about W. Stillman (Syros); Spyridon Komnos, curator of the National Library of Greece (Athens); two copies of a letter by J. C. B. Davis, acting Secretary of State; two copies of the answer to the letters of recall of Charles K. Tuckerman, addressed to the President of United States by King George of Greece; Leōnidas Meletopoulos [Athens]; George Henry Calvert; a note from "Den Kongl. Porcellainsfabrik; Eugene Schuyler; Epameinōndas Delēgeōrgēs, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs (Athens) on Tuckerman's work "The Greeks of today"; Constance Ann, Lady Muncaster (Muncaster Castle); Prince Philippe of Orléans, Count of Paris (Château d'Eu); letter from Nikolaos Dēligiannēs, chargé d'affaires of Greece in Paris, to C. K. Tuckerman, accompanying the medal of the Order of Redeemer conferred on him by the King; William Henry Waddington, French statesman, to "Mademoiselle et chère cousine"; Eliza Lynn Linton; William Wetmore Story; Sir Edward Watkin, British Member of Parliament and railway entrepreneur, to C. K. Tuckerman (mourning stationery); Thomas Adolphus Trollope; John Bigelow Sr.; Constance Fenimore Woolson, American novelist, poet, and short story writer (1 postcard, ca 1890]; Hector Malot, French writer; Baron Otto von Klenck; Henry Codman Potter; a note from James Ballantyne, Sir Walter Scott's publisher; and Robert Milligan McLane.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
