This collection consists of librarian Charles Haynes McMullen's data cards (numbering about 10,000) that McMullen compiled for his publication American Libraries before 1876 (2000). They are Unisort Analysis Cards, a 1960s system for data retrieval.

Collection Creator Biography:

McMullen

Charles Haynes McMullen was a librarian who published American Libraries before 1876 (2000), the culmination of his life's studies. He taught at the Indiana University Library School from 1951 to 1972 and was an Emeritus Professor of Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1972 to 1985. He was also head librarian at what is now James Madison University. McMullen received his B.A. from Centre College of Kentucky in 1935, his M.S. from the University of Illinois in 1940, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1949.

Custodial History

Received from Kenneth Carpenter (Kress Collection, Baker Library, Harvard University) in 2004, who received the cards from McMullen, circa 2000.
