Thomas Jefferson Wertenbaker was an American historian who taught at Princeton from 1910 to 1947. He was internationally recognized and wrote a number of important historical works. In 1947, he was president of the American Historical Association. His papers consist of Wertenbaker's works, correspondence, photographs, miscellaneous material, and printed matter.

Series 1: Outgoing Correspondence, 1121-1980

The Russell papers contain drafts and carbon copies of some 13,000 letters which Russell wrote over the years 1908 - 1950 (approx.). These letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent. Correspondents include not only individuals, but businesses, scientific societies, schools and divisions of Princeton University. Letters to individuals filed under corporate entries may be located by consulting the file of white cards in the manuscripts catalogue. For example, looking in the cross-reference file under the name of R.A. Gregory, one finds a card which reads as follows:

Series 2: Incoming Correspondence, 1026-2937

This series includes some 10,000 letters, telegrams, postcards and other communications received by Russell and his immediate associates over the years 1897 to 1956. The letters are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically for each correspondent, with corporate entries and cross reference cards as described for the outgoing correspondence. Russell's colleagues often sought his opinion of their work, and some 175 manuscripts are interspersed with the incoming letters. Folders of correspondence which contain one or more manuscripts are labeled on the right side "Manuscript enclosed with correspondence". At the same time, there is a 3 x 5 yellow card for each manuscript which lists its author, title, length, date, and location. The yellow cards are arranged alphabetically by author in a file stored in the manuscripts catalogue.

Charles K. Tuckerman Papers, 1812-1929

Consists of the personal papers of Charles K. Tuckerman, the first United States Minister to Greece. Included in the archive is incoming and outgoing correspondence with several military and political officials, authors, and several members of royal families of Europe. There is also a large amount of autographed letters signed from King George I.

Letters from Miscellaneous Dignitaries, 1829-1894

Consists of letters from Charles Tuckerman to the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs (Athens); a copy of a letter to Dēmētrios Botsarēs (Corfu); and C. K. Tuckerman to "those of his countrymen who are now in Athens", about the day of National Thanksgiving (Athens). The rest of the incoming correspondence comprises autographed letters to Charles Tuckerman from miscellaneous politicians, writers, journalists and other dignitaries, including: "To my dear Charley on his Birth day," 11 March 1829 (three quatrains, inscribed on verso: "For Charles K. Scrapbook with Letters from American Dignitaries, 1827-1903

Consists of incoming autographed letters signed by several American authors, military and political officials, including Caroline Kirkland, J. G. Holland, I.M. Lawrence, Esq., Columbia College, New York (from the President's Room), G.W. Curtis, Francis Marion Crawford, George Bancroft, Senator Charles Summer, Elihu Benjamin Washburne (U.S. Minister to France), Rev. Henry Whitney Bellows (one letter to Charles Tuckerman and one to Henry Tuckerman), Sir Edward Thornton, the American Legation in Vienna, from the Department of State, Washington to Fleming Tuckerman. The letters are attached in a scrapbook, unpaginated, measuring 31 x 25 cm., belonging to Charles Tuckerman. On the front paste down, there is attached a label with golden lettering "Autographs" and on the flyleaf the handwritten inscription "American."

Consists of incoming correspondence from several European authors, military and political officials, and noble people, including Sydney Lady Morgan, William Charles Macready, John Bright, Earl of Rosebery, Earl of Derby, Sir Charles Lyell, the Dean of Canterbury, Count Clary for the Empress Eugenie, Lord Houghton, Sir Charles Dilke, P. Th. Kolocotronis (son of Theodōros Kolokotrōnēs, the Greek general and the pre-eminent leader of the Greek War of Independence) (2), Sir Edwin Arnold, George Finlay, Princess Nazlie Khalil, the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, M. Scobeleff, Eliza Lynn Linton, Sir Edward William Watkin (2), 1st Baronet, Archbishop of York (2), Tomasso Salvini, the Marquess of Harlington, Lord Garnet Wolseley, Edward Freeman, Sir Henry Elliot, Marchioness of Salisbury, and Dēmētrios Vikelas. The Lewis Thomas papers consist primarily of files from the years (1973-1983) that Thomas (Princeton Class of 1933) spent as president and, later, chancellor, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. These contain general correspondence with doctors, drafts and reprints of his essays and books, files of lectures, presentations, and awards, and files of scientific organizations with which he was involved. There are also drafts and reprints of early scientific papers (which pre-date his years at MSKCC).
